With expectations to establish spiritual ground for
ceramic culture and to provide academic and theological
criteria for the systematic improvement of Korean ceramics,
WOCEK hosts the International Ceramics Symposium. Members
of such prestigious organizations as the IAC, NCECA and
ACerS, as well as world-renowned experts in ceramics,
will participate, allowing a special occasion for measuring
the status of Korean ceramics in the eyes of the world
and also for positioning Kyonggi Province as the center
of the world's ceramic culture.
The International Ceramics Symposium will be continued
after the 2001 event, hand in hand with the World Ceramic
Biennale. As the first event, the symposium will cover
all periods and areas related to ceramics. Reflecting
Korea's local traditions as the host country, its aim
is to illuminate the future path of ceramics by analyzing
the characteristics and similarities in the Eastern and
Western ceramic cultures, and by organically grafting
the past into the present. Overcoming the general tendency
that views the East as focused on reviving past traditions
and the West as future-directed, we are trying to make
this an occasion to identify the East-West exchanges in
the history of ceramics and to forecast future directions.
The Symposium is organized by Prof. Hyung-Min Chung of
Seoul National University and will consist of 3 keynote
speeches, 5 special lectures and 10 lectures and discussions,
under the topics "Retrospect: Ceramics in History,""Passage:
Ceramics in Culture" and "Prospect: Ceramics in Technological
and Education." |
